Brain Dump
Brain Dump has no account, no server of its own, no ads and no analytics. Your dumps stay on your phone. Out of the box it works offline; it only talks to an AI service if you add your own key for one.
What the app stores
What you say or type, and the tasks, notes, ideas and reminders sorted from it, on your phone.
Your settings. If you add an OpenAI or Anthropic API key, it's kept in Android's encrypted secure storage on your phone.
Speech
By default, Brain Dump uses your phone's own speech recognition to turn what you say into text. That service is part of Android, chosen by your phone's maker (usually Google). Depending on your phone and its settings, it may process audio on the device or send it to its provider, under that provider's privacy policy.
If you add an OpenAI key, your recording is sent to OpenAI to be transcribed instead. The recording is kept in the app's cache folder on your phone, which Android clears when it needs space, or when you clear the app's cache.
AI sorting (optional)
Without a key, dumps are sorted on your phone by built-in rules and nothing is sent anywhere.
If you add an OpenAI or Anthropic (Claude) API key, the text of each dump (and, for OpenAI, the recording) is sent directly from your phone to the service you chose, to sort it. It goes to that service under your own account and key, and is handled under that company's privacy policy and API terms. It never passes through a server of ours, because there isn't one.
Remove the key in settings to stop sending anything.
Permissions
Microphone: to hear you while you hold the button. Nothing is recorded otherwise.
Notifications, alarms and reminders, and starting after a restart: to deliver the reminders you set, on time and after the phone restarts.
Internet: only used if you've added an AI key.
Sharing
Brain Dump doesn't sell or share your data. Apart from the optional AI services above, which you choose and pay for, nothing leaves your phone unless you share a dump yourself with Android's share sheet.
Deleting your data
Delete any item in the app. Uninstalling the app, or clearing its storage in Android settings, deletes everything, including your keys. For anything already sent to OpenAI or Anthropic, see their data retention policies.
Children
The app isn't aimed at children.
Phone backups
If you've turned on backup to your Google account in Android's settings, Android may include Brain Dump's saved data in that backup. The backup belongs to your Google account and isn't sent to me.
Changes to this policy
If the app starts handling data differently, this page will be updated before that version is released, and the date above will change.
